Chapter Nine

Tegan crouched on the bathroom floor and fiddled with the washer. Her fingers were stiff from working so much. She’d installed so many bathrooms in the last three days that she seemed to be on autopilot.

From farther down the corridor came the rumble of men’s voices, growing louder as they came nearer. Tegan kept up her pace. She couldn’t afford to slow, not even for a moment, or be distracted in any way.

Click, the bathroom door opened, bringing with it a blast of cold air. She sighed. Why couldn’t everyone leave her alone? She turned, ready to tell whoever it was to politely go away when her eyes widened. It was Gustave. He was with Emerson, the paunchy guy who’d pitched against her for the contract. They both wore sweatpants and had that smug air about them of people who’d just been for a workout.

Gustave was carrying an iPad, which he now looked at.

“This is going to be the mermaid room, right?” he said to Tegan.

“That’s right.” She sensed trouble but wasn’t sure from where.

“I’d like to have a mermaid,” Emerson said. “She could soap me off in the shower. It would be handy.”

“You mean handsy,” Gustave said.

They both laughed.

Tegan gritted her teeth. They were acting like they were in high school.

“How many bathrooms have you got left to do?” Emerson asked.

“A few,” she said, cagily.

Emerson gave her a sympathetic smile. “It’s one huge job. You must be flat out. I guess your team is starting at the bottom, right, and working its way up? Look, why don’t I get my contractors to start at the fifteenth floor and we’ll meet somewhere in the middle?”

Tegan got up slowly with the screwdriver. She knew exactly where she’d like to shove it.

“I won the contract,” she said. It was hard not to grind her teeth. “My company is fitting all the bathrooms. Every single one.”

“We were only trying to help,” Gustave said.

“That’s okay,” she said in a sickly-sweet voice. “Thanks for the offer.”

She knelt, turned her back to them and carried on working. Seconds later, they walked away, but, as she continued with the toilet, her mind churned and she realized that she was loosening rather than tightening the washer. What the hell was that about? She’d relaxed about winning the contract, but clearly she shouldn’t have. Emerson was trying to undermine her and get back in on the job.

She got up, crossed the room and peered out into the corridor. They stood in an alcove some distance away with their backs to her, caught up in conversation. Heart hammering, she crept up and ducked behind a nearby pillar.

“I hate to say it,” Emerson was saying to Gustave, “but that chick knows what she’s doing and so does her team. I looked in on a few of them before we went to the gym.”

“Even so,” Gustave said, “I’d like you to keep your contractors on standby.”

“On standby?”

Gustave chuckled. “For the sinks. Let’s discuss this over coffee.”

Tegan watched them go, feeling even more confused than before.
